Can lipomas be cancerous?
Lipomas are typically benign and don’t become cancerous. There is, however, a very rare form of cancer called liposarcoma that exists. It develops within the fatty tissue of the lipoma.

What causes lipomas?
There is little definitive information on why lipomas occur, however, they have been considered to be hereditary and linked to conditions such as Gardener syndrome, Madelung disease and Cowden syndrome.

Lipomas are typically removed if they cause patients physical pain or become large enough to cause pressure on nearby nerves. Lipomas can also be removed if patients are concerned about their physical appearance.
